I feel that salmon should be the symbol for game programmers.

Game programmers swim mightily upstream against the currents to give birth to a game.

Then they die.  Well that's how it feels towards the end.

But from the death of one project comes the seeds of a new one.

... then again, in modern times games are rarely finished when they ship, because they can be continuously improved online ...

... so it's good to pace yourself, and only crunch when you need to ...

... or better yet, when you want to, 'cause you're on a roll ...

... if you're lucky and the stars align ...

... the final game is as smooth as the airflow over this wing ...

... some days you feel like salmon fry, swimming in circles,

staring at the same bit of code that refuses to yield ...

... game code is always in motion ...

... especially asynchronous code ...

... you have to freeze an image in your mind ...

... it's a moment of magic when the pieces suddenly fit into a coherent whole ...

... then you tell yourself, "Self, that wasn't so hard." ...

"I want to do that again!"
